Preface Data visualizations are all around us. They are in the news, in our classrooms, at our jobs, and part of our lives. They can be simple, like the speedometer on your car, or complex, like the analysis of voting patterns in a presidential election. Visualizations rely on our ability to group like items, follow trends, and identify outliers to deliver us information from the noise of complex data. This information is imperative for effective decision making. Businesses rely on carefully calculated decisions to achieve success, but to get this information, they rely on analysts to gather, interpret, and visualize data. Information derived from data reveals insights on customer behaviors, periodicity, outliers, and more. The analyst must understand the nuances behind gathering, organizing, visualizing, and interpreting data. They need to understand the subject matter of their charts and apply context to the information they display. They must also present their analysis in a meaningful and understandable way to business decision makers. Executive leadership needs information to make effective decisions to drive the direction of the business; however, the

benefits of data analysis are not limited to leadership. Any area of a business benefits from analyzing data, including HR, finance, production line, purchasing and beyond. In addition, technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing are opening new avenues for analyzing large, complex data sets. It’s no wonder that a skill set in a data visualization tool like Tableau is in such high demand. Since you’re reading this book, you probably understand the benefits of visualizing data, but why is this book beneficial to you? When I first became an analyst and started my journey with Tableau, I received a very basic introductory course on how to use the software to analyze data. After that, however, my experience in Tableau was simply what I discovered on my own as I worked with the tool for my job. After using it for a couple of years, I learned about the certification process and decided this would be a great way to compare my knowledge to that of others in the industry. In preparation for my first exam, I went online and searched for example questions, study guides, and other resources. To my dismay, I found nothing specifically oriented toward studying for the exam. I did find some information on what to study, along with some sample questions on the Tableau site, but I knew that these few questions were not representative of the

overall exam. I ended up paying for a study course with a sample exam at the end, which I passed with reasonable ease. I took my first exam and passed with a 93%. From that point on, every two years, I prepared to refresh my certification. At the same time, I renewed my search for study guides and sample exam questions online. Each time I looked, the results were the same: I could find a few sample exam questions and some video training, but nothing that truly served as an effective study guide. Most of the sample questions I did find were littered with trick questions or not realistically something you would find on the exam. Without any reliable resource to study from, I simply had to rely on my own knowledge to review and prepare for the exam. That’s where I hope this book comes in for you. My goal is to provide you with a guide to review and study from as you prepare for your Tableau Certified Data Analyst exam. My goal is not to dive into the deep details and explain everything to you; rather, I want to give you a quick synopsis of what you need to remember before you take the exam. More importantly, I want to provide you with example questions! I’ve scattered example questions throughout the book and provided a complete example exam at the end. You can use these to test

your knowledge, identify weaknesses to study, and give you confidence when taking the exam. Why Tableau? Data visualization provides a powerful way to dig into data, and Tableau is one of the leading software titles in the field. Tableau Desktop can measure and segment data in a variety of visual formats, allowing you to see patterns and outliers quickly. It hosts powerful tools that allow you to filter, sort, and organize data easily. It also provides a variety of data source connection types, both stored locally and hosted online. This means that you can combine data between multiple systems that otherwise would not talk to each other, further enhancing your analytic opportunities. In addition, Tableau Prep Builder was developed to supplement the Tableau visualization tool. This data preparation tool further simplifies the data pulling process via an interactive visual interface. It lets you easily clean, aggregate, and combine data sources; preview the data; and identify data mismatches, typos, and other common data errors. Used together, Tableau Prep Builder and Tableau Desktop allow you to investigate and understand complex data sets and relationships.

Certification Tableau offers five different certifications, which are listed in Table P-1. Table P-1. Available Tableau certifications for Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server as of early 2025. Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud Tableau Desktop Specialist Tableau Data Analyst Tableau Consultant Tableau Server Associate Tableau Architect This guide book is focused on certifications related to Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder. While it includes questions related to publishing and securing content on Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud, it will not contain questions about building or maintaining that server. It focuses specifically on the Tableau Data Analyst certification exam, but contains material relevant to many of the other exams. The list in Table P-2 breaks down what each of the three non-server-focused exams cover, how each exam is structured, how long it takes to complete, and how much it costs in comparison to the others, in order of increasing difficulty.

Here are some specifics: Tableau Desktop Specialist This exam is designed for individuals who are just starting out in Tableau. It is less expensive and shorter than the other Tableau Desktop exams, but focused on building basic visualizations and utilizing the Tableau Desktop interface. It consists of 45 multiple-choice questions with options for selecting one or more answers over the course of 60 minutes. Tableau Data Analyst This exam is the primary focus of this book. The analyst exam goes beyond the basics of Tableau Desktop, pulling in questions about data transformations, Tableau Prep Builder, and sharing and securing your workbook. It is more expensive than the Tableau Desktop Specialist exam and provides you with an additional hour, for a total of 120 minutes. It has 40 multiple-choice questions. See the “Exam Structure” section for more information on the question types. Tableau Consultant

This exam has the same in structure and price as the Data Analyst Exam, but goes beyond data preparation and data visualization. The multiple-choice and multiple-selection questions focus instead on analyzing a client, determining reporting gaps, and integrating Tableau into existing reporting structures. The exam also poses questions from a consulting perspective related to cloud migrations, requirements gathering, data storage, and data transformation. As this guide is designed with the Tableau Data Analyst exam in mind, the content within will be focused on pulling data, transforming it, analyzing it, and utilizing Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud to share it with others. That being said, the content in this guide will also prove useful if you are preparing for the Desktop Specialist or Consultant role, but may fall short of covering the detailed aspects of data analytic consulting. Exam Structure As of October 2024, the exam consists entirely of multiple- choice and multiple-selection questions. This new format removes the performance aspect of the exam to focus entirely on your knowledge of the tool. The questions are designed to

test your skill in bringing in, transforming, and analyzing data using Tableau or Tableau Prep Builder. There are also questions about dashboard design and server security. The exam consists of 40 questions and may contain several question formats: Single-select multiple-choice You are asked about something and provided with four to five possible answers, only one of which is correct. Multi-select multiple-choice This type of question asks you to identify multiple correct answers and typically tells you how many you need to select. Sorting This question provides a list of correct answers and prompts you to arrange them in the correct order. An example of this would be sorting a series of filter types by the order in which they are applied. Fill in the blank This question gives you an incomplete form and asks you to place the appropriate fields into the blank sections.

Most often, this type of question is related to structuring calculations correctly. The exam has options to mark questions if you wish to revisit them before submission. Throughout the exam, there are also spaces where you can leave feedback if you feel a question is ambiguous or impossible to answer. These comment sections are reviewed at the end of exams, but usually do not affect the final score. Exam Format Tableau is very focused on ensuring that exams are completed fairly. There are three primary ways you can take a Tableau certification exam: online with a proctor, at a certified testing center, or as part of your Tableau Conference experience. Which one you choose will determine what your exam experience will be like. All exams include options for those with disabilities. If you have a disability that requires you to take additional time for the exam, be sure to inquire ahead of time. Taking an Exam at Tableau Conference If you plan to dive into Tableau fully, then you will probably want to attend the annual Tableau Conference. This multiday

event is great for learning, socializing, and honing your skills. It’s also a great place to register for and take your certification exam. Blocks of conference time are available specifically for taking the exam. You register for the exam and simply work it into your conference schedule. When the time comes, you arrive at the designated location and provide your credentials to enter the exam room. Inside, you and many other test takers will be seated at a personal laptop station to take the exam. Tableau takes steps to ensure these crowded test rooms are protected from cheating. The room is usually mixed with individuals taking any of the listed certification exams. Additionally, your questions can differ in content and sequence from those given to the other users around you. This means that even if your neighbor is taking the same exam as you, their questions may be in a different order or come from a different question set altogether! During the exam, you’ll be provided with a pencil and a piece of paper to make notes. Proctors patrol the room and are available to answer questions related to taking the exam, but not questions related to the topics within. Once you complete the exam, you simply close out of the session and quietly exit the room.
