Modern JavaScript programming with real world web apps
Key Features
Learn JavaScript from scratch by building clones of popular web applications
Understand the core concepts and techniques surrounding JavaScript with this power-packed hands-on guide
Explore modern JavaScript frameworks and libraries such as Node, React and Webpack
Book Description
JavaScript is the programming language that all web developers need to learn. The first item on our JavaScript to-do list is building g a To-do list app, which you'll have done by the end of the first chapter. You'll explore DOM manipulation with JavaScript and work with event listeners. You'll work with images and text to build a Meme creator. You will also learn about ES (ECMAScript) classes, and will be introduced to layouts using the CSS3 Flexbox.
You'll also develop a responsive Event Registration form that allows users to register for your upcoming event and use charts and graphics to display registration data. You will then build a weather application, which will show you different ways perform AJAX requests and work with dynamic, external data. WebRTC enables real-time communication in a web browser; you'll learn how to use it when you build a real-time video-call and chat application later in the book.
Towards the end of the book, you will meet React, Facebook's JavaScript library for building user interfaces. You'll throw together a blog with React, and get a feel for why this kind of JavaScript framework is used to build large-scale applications. To make your blog more maintainable and scalable, you'll use Redux to manage data across React components.
What you will learn
A strong understanding of web application development with JavaScript and ES6.

【One-Line Pitch】
A hands-on, project-driven introduction to modern JavaScript (ES6) and web development, this book teaches by building seven real apps—from a To-Do list to a React blog—making it ideal for developers with basic HTML/CSS/JS knowledge who want to learn by doing rather than by theory.
【Book Arc】
- **Opening (~0%–16%)**: Sets up the development environment (Node.js, npm, Chrome) and introduces ES6 fundamentals—classes, arrow functions, and event listeners—through a simple To-Do list app, establishing the core pattern of DOM manipulation and modular code organization.
- **Early (~16%–34%)**: Deepens the To-Do app with array methods like `reduce()`, event handling for keypresses, and the concept of binding `this` in callbacks; then transitions to tooling by explaining npm packages, global vs. local installs, and using `http-server` for local testing.
- **Middle (~34%–53%)**: Introduces Babel for transpiling ES6 to ES5, then moves to the Meme Creator project, which covers CSS3 Flexbox for responsive layouts, HTML5 Canvas for drawing graphics, and Webpack for bundling and optimizing production builds.
- **Late (~53%–75%)**: Builds an Event Registration app with form validation and data visualization via charts, teaching AJAX request methods and working with dynamic external data; then constructs a Weather Widget using HTML5 custom elements and web components.
- **Ending (~75%–100%)**: Covers WebRTC for real-time video-call and chat applications, then shifts to React for building a blog with `create-react-app` and `react-router`, and finally introduces Redux for managing state across React components to make the blog scalable and maintainable.
【Key Takeaways】
- **ES6 classes and arrow functions are the backbone of modern JS** (Early): The book demonstrates how classes organize code into modules and how arrow functions simplify callbacks, especially when combined with array methods like `reduce()` to generate HTML dynamically.
- **Event listeners are best set up in constructors** (Early): Adding listeners in the class constructor ensures they're initialized once, and using the event object (e.g., `keyCode === 13` for Enter) enables clean, reusable functions for user interactions.
- **`this` binding is a common pitfall in callbacks** (Early): The book explains why you must `.bind(this)` in ES5 callbacks to access class methods, and how arrow functions solve this elegantly—a crucial concept for avoiding bugs in real apps.
- **npm is the gateway to JavaScript tooling** (Middle): Understanding flags like `-g`, `-S`, and `-D` for installing packages globally, locally, or as dev dependencies is essential; the book uses `http-server` as a practical example for serving static files.
- **Babel and Webpack are essential for production-ready code** (Middle): Transpiling ES6 to ES5 ensures browser compatibility, while Webpack bundles dependencies and optimizes assets (minified, versioned) for deployment—skills that transfer directly to professional workflows.
- **Flexbox and Canvas enable creative, responsive UIs** (Middle): The Meme Creator project shows how Flexbox simplifies layout alignment and how HTML5 Canvas allows drawing graphics programmatically, expanding what you can build beyond standard DOM elements.
- **AJAX and web components handle dynamic data and reusability** (Late): The Event Registration app teaches different AJAX methods for fetching data, while the Weather Widget introduces custom elements—both patterns are foundational for modern, data-driven web apps.
- **React and Redux scale up for large applications** (Ending): React's component model and `create-react-app` tooling make UI development efficient, and Redux centralizes state management to keep data flow predictable across components—critical for maintainability.
【Reading Tips】
- **Skim the environment setup if you're experienced** (Early): Chapters 1–2 include detailed installation steps for Node, npm, and Chrome; if you already have these, jump straight to the ES6 syntax explanations and code walkthroughs.
- **Deep-read the To-Do and Meme Creator chapters** (Early–Middle): These two projects cover the most transferable skills—DOM manipulation, event handling, array methods, Flexbox, and Canvas—so take time to understand each line of code rather than just copying it.
- **Watch for the `this` binding explanations** (Early): The book revisits this concept multiple times; if it confuses you initially, note how arrow functions resolve it and revisit the examples after building the To-Do app.
- **Use the terminal examples as practice** (Middle): The npm and Babel sections are hands-on; run the commands yourself (e.g., `http-server -p 8085`) to get comfortable with the CLI, as later chapters rely heavily on terminal usage.
- **Treat React/Redux as an introduction, not a deep dive** (Ending): The final chapters give a taste of these frameworks; if you're new to them, focus on the conceptual flow (components, state, props) rather than memorizing every API.
【Coverage Limits】
This guide synthesizes the book's structure and key technical concepts from the provided excerpts; it does not cover detailed code listings, specific chart libraries, or the full WebRTC implementation, which are best explored in the actual chapters.
