Acknowledgements This book was almost waiting to happen in our home. As a couple working mostly from home for the past few years, our evenings often revolve around technology—discussing ideas over our favorite tea, exchanging thoughts on the latest trends, and facing challenges together. Writing this book felt like a natural extension of those conversations, a way to capture and share what we have learned. A huge thank you to our family and friends for their support, especially our daughter Niharika. Her curiosity, patience, and love have been a constant source of motivation for us. She has been part of this journey in her own way, often watching us work together. We are deeply grateful to BPB Publications for their guidance in bringing this book to life. We would also like to thank our passionate colleagues we’ve met in Germany, who inspired us even more to share our knowledge. Moving to Germany from India, was a decision driven by our thirst for deeper expertise and learning in the IT industry, and we’ve been fortunate to work alongside some of the brightest minds. Their insights, feedback, and shared experiences have shaped our understanding and, ultimately, this book. Finally, to our readers—thank you for your interest and support. We hope this book makes your GKE journey

smoother and maybe even sparks some of those tech discussions of your own. Happy learning!

Preface The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. – Alan Watts In a world of constant change, especially in the field of cloud computing, adaptability is key. This book is not a traditional textbook—it is a hands-on guide, written by engineers, for engineers. Over the years of working with Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), we have gathered insights and practical knowledge that we wish we had when starting out. This book is our way of sharing that knowledge with you, in the hope that it will simplify your journey and make GKE more accessible, whether you are a beginner or an experienced IT professional. GKE has rapidly become one of the most powerful platforms for managing containerized applications. As businesses increasingly rely on cloud computing, GKE stands out for its scalability, flexibility, and efficiency. With all its power, it can also be complex. That is where this book comes in. We have designed it to be a practical, hands-on resource that simplifies GKE, helping you get started quickly and build the skills you need to deploy and manage containerized applications confidently. In the early chapters, we will start with the basics— introducing you to containerization and Kubernetes, setting
Page 14
the stage for your GKE experience. From there, we will guide you through the process of creating and configuring GKE clusters, deploying applications, and troubleshooting common issues. Each chapter is carefully crafted to focus on real-world scenarios, with step-by-step tutorials that give you hands-on experience with the platform. As you progress, you will explore advanced features like network policies, workload identity, and integration with tools like Helm and Argo CD. By the time you reach the end of the book, you will be ready to architect, deploy, and maintain containerized applications on Google Cloud with confidence. Whether you are a student eager to learn, a developer looking to expand your skills, or an IT professional seeking to refine your expertise, this book will equip you with the knowledge to leverage the full power of GKE. Our goal is simple: Make cloud-native application management easier and more approachable for everyone. We hope this book helps you take that first step into the world of GKE and empowers you to tackle complex cloud challenges with clarity and confidence. Welcome to your journey with GKE! Chapter 1: Introduction to Kubernetes and Containerization - This chapter begins by looking at why traditional applications struggle in today’s fast-paced world and how containerization solves those problems. You will learn what containers are, why they are so useful, and how Kubernetes helps manage them efficiently. Think of this as your foundation for everything that follows in the book. Chapter 2: Overview of Google Cloud Platform - Before diving into GKE, it is important to understand the basics of
Page 15
Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This chapter introduces you to GCP’s key services and how they provide the backbone for running Kubernetes. We then explore GKE and how it makes Kubernetes easier to manage in the cloud. Chapter 3: Creating and Configuring a GKE Cluster - Here is where things get hands-on! We walk you through setting up your first GKE cluster, configuring essential components, and making sure everything is running smoothly. By the end of this chapter, you will have a working cluster and the confidence to explore further. Chapter 4: Setting Up Your GKE Environment - Setting up your environment properly is key to a smooth GKE experience. In this chapter, we cover the must-have tools and configurations to ensure you are ready to work with GKE efficiently. Think of this as setting up your workspace before getting started with real-world projects. Chapter 5: Deploying Applications on GKE - Now comes the exciting part—getting your applications up and running on GKE. We cover everything from basic deployments to advanced tools like Helm and ArgoCD, helping you deploy, manage, and scale applications efficiently. Chapter 6: Networking in GKE - Networking is crucial for making your applications work seamlessly. In this chapter, we break down GKE networking concepts in a simple way—how services communicate, how traffic flows, and how to optimize performance. Chapter 7: Monitoring and Logging - Keeping an eye on your applications and infrastructure is vital. This chapter shows you how to use monitoring and logging tools to track
Page 16
performance, detect issues early, and keep everything running smoothly. Chapter 8: Security in GKE - Security is not just an add- on—it is a necessity. Here, we cover how to protect your clusters, secure secrets, and follow best practices to ensure your applications remain safe from threats. Chapter 9: Troubleshooting and Best Practices - Things do not always go as planned, so knowing how to troubleshoot is a must. We walk through common GKE issues, debugging techniques, and best practices to keep your clusters stable and efficient. Chapter 10: Advanced Topics in GKE - In this final chapter, we will level up and explore advanced GKE features like workload identity, network policies, and managing complex applications. By the end, you will have a solid grasp of GKE’s full potential.
